Figure 12.1 The experiential learning cycle

Kolb’s experiential learning cycle is complimented by the work of Schön,2 who describes the process of reflection in action: the professional dealing with a unique situation (and every interview is unique) by applying a combination of learned theories and experience in order to solve the problem (in this case to maximize interview effectiveness). Akin to Kolb’s abstract conceptualization, Schön’s model includes the formulation of a fresh hypothesis after reflection on the issue at hand (‘I think if I spend longer building rapport in my next interview I will get a better account’). The revised hypothesis is then tested by applying it to the next situation (next interview = concrete experience). Reflective practice is an appropriate way to learn from thinking about personal performance. However, it is equally applicable to ‘learning’ from a reflective examination of the output of the interview—essential to progressing the current investigation.

12.4 The PEACE experience

Evaluation is the final stage of the PEACE model (Figure 12.2).

The earliest PEACE text pointed out that:

if you are to improve and develop as an interviewer, it is essential that you reflect on the way you conducted the interview.3

According to the official training text the Practical Guide to Investigative Interviewing, evaluation is an integral part of the interview process.4 Its purpose is to:

• examine whether the aims and objectives for the interview have been achieved.

• review the investigation in the light of information obtained during the interview.

• develop interviewing skills by evaluating how you performed and setting goals for the future.5

In effect, practitioners were being invited to carry out both operational evaluation and developmental evaluation.
